Heather Shirin, The Unwritten Lyrics

A solo show by Heather Shirin
Heather Shirin's art nouveau portraits of women are done with acrylic, painted directly on ungessoed birch panels, purposely allowing the natural beauty of the wood grain to shine thru in the female figure’s skin. Her current series focuses on using fine art papers, metallic paints and gold leaf to create their hair, clothing and the background designs. Heather’s mixed media paintings are large scale, on deep birch panels - and are quite luminous with metallic and other reflective materials.

"As an Irish American, I have a cultural history of storytelling. I create artwork that on the surface tells a safe and comfortable story using recognizable images. The pieces are not intended to hold the answers about humanity, but rather cultivate questions to consider and discuss."

"When I travel I take photos of graffiti, derelict buildings, piles of rubble, crumbling walls and rusty objects--the kind of urban artifacts that most of us normally ignore or try to avoid.
